Helping Hands Apprenticeship Program



Accra, Ghana

The Helping Hands Apprenticeship Program (HHAP) provides artisan training to young men, ages 15 - 24 years old. The year-long training teaches the participants traditional African craft skills, such as bead work, Djembe drum making, plating, and painting. Participants in the modified apprenticeship program works under professional crafts men. Apprentices are provided meal and partly taken care of whilst they live by their families or parents at home.

The program participants are part of a particularly vulnerable population, their work by trading and hacking on the streets Ghana, weaving in and out of traffic selling goods, due to familiar not able to support and needs of other resources. The young men and women would wish to continue their education, but often at times do not have the finances support. All participants graduate from HHAP with a specific skill been self reliance.
 
HHAP program was initiated by Mr. Abu Adamu an art and craft collector in 2009, the program was partially funded by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning / National Commission on Culture grant to support the rich cultural  of arts and crafts with youth training. Because of limited funding opportunities available, HHAP has only sporadically provided training to young men since then.

A lecturer Professor  Dorie Gilbert of University of Taxes as part supported with a great idea of' Ghana Maymester program with , the 2012 team in collaboration with students of the University of Taxes has worked hand in hand with Mr. Abu, the Skilled Master, and the Helping Hands graduating class of 2013 to develop sustainable procedures for the program and achieve the mission of partly discouraging and eradicating hacking and trading of goods for distributors on the streets, for a very minimal wage.
